RE: Fuel Prices
Yes - let's drill for the oil under our feet before the Russians, Chinese and others that are laughing at us siphon it all away. It is time for a good old Texas Tea Party. The economy is absolutely BOOMING down here while the rest of the country suffers. Why is that? Golly gee whiz...the OIL INDUSTRY. It is profitable again to drill for our own oil. Let's build more refineries! The technology has changed greatly since the last one was built in this country (in the 70's!!) and the process is cleaned up. While we are drilling and refining our own oil, we can get down to the real work of developing alternate fuel sources for reliable sustainability.
Let's keep Americans working! That way, we can afford to buy more American made RV's and keep camping! :)

RE: Fuel Prices
You aren't going to like my reply - but the fuel companies (ExxonMobil, BP, Shell, etc.) only realize a 7 to 8 percent profit off the price we pay at the pumps. That is seven to eight percent they have to build new refineries (if they could get a permit from the Federal Gov't to even build one, let alone expand capacity.) That is a seven to eight percent profit they have to develop new oil/gas fields and fund their exploration efforts (if they can even do THAT). That is seven to eight percent they have to dedicate to research and development - i.e. renewable fuel sources and alternate energy projects. That is also seven to eight percent in profits which a great many Americans enjoy through their 401K and IRA retirement accounts. Oh yea...and seven to eight percent to pay the more than 40% that the Federal Government takes from them in taxes already.
What has us over the literal barrel is first and foremost - the cost of a barrel of oil. Where is the greater majority of this oil? In the Middle East. Do you think the oil companies just go over there and take what they want? Nope - they have to pay some Middle Eastern sheik (OPEC) for the oil removed from their ground...even though all the infrastructure was built and maintained by the very companies you want to seize profits from.
Also blame the speculators and hedge funds who drive up the price of a barrel of oil every time some wild eyed dictator so much as sneezes.
Did you know the Russians are horizontal drilling into what SHOULD be American oil fields off the coast of Alaska and into ANWAR? Did you know the Chinese are doing the same? Did you know the Venezuelans in conjunction with the Cubans are horizontal drilling into American oil fields off the Gulf of Mexico?
We are being robbed blind by the World and our Government is too short sighted to do anything about it. Until the people in this country educate themselves on what is REALLY going on in the World and demand APPROPRIATE action from Congress regarding our energy needs and policies, nothing will change.
No, I do not work for big oil - just a thinking person living in South Texas who too is tired of paying high gas prices but cares to research herself for the truth.

RE: Mirrors for Chevy Silverado 1500
I have a set of the CIPA mirrors that I used on my 02 1500. Same mirrors as on my 06 2500HD.
Looks like we are driving just about the same vehicles. Nice truck.
That is great news that the CIPA mirrors for your 1500 fit your 2500. With that bit of info, I will order the same mirrors.
You are right - the 2500HD is a nice truck and I love to drive it. With gas prices being what they are though, it is basically only used as a tow vehicle these days.

RE: Mirrors for Chevy Silverado 1500
I too need some towing mirrors - but for an '06 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD. I seem to be able to find them for as recent as the 2005 model, but not the 2006. Anyone have a source?
FYI - Vision View Mirrors www.visionviewmirrors.com has the CIPA mirrors 20% off and with the storage bag.

RE: What to do in the wind.
Head inland! Before we got the TT, we rode out a category 2 at home. Won't do THAT one again. We will take off and come home as soon as it passes. Just another good excuse to go camping in my book!

Long, ugly story short - I had a situation where our TT sat for over a month with stuff in the black tank. To tell you the truth, I was scared to death to open the door as we had empty tanks "sit and stink" this past September. Was that ever horrible! However, when I opened the door to the TT this time, it still smelled fresh and clean! I am amazed. This stuff has certainly earned my loyalty!!

RE: RV rental near Houston
To get to Port Lavaca, you will have to get off 59 at Victoria and take 87 South. And,I agree with Wolfe10 - 59/77 is the most direct route and there isn't much at all to see on that route as far as "scenery" goes. It is flat and "boring"...unless you aren't from S Texas and consider it "quaint".
However, if you are interested, there is TONS of history. They recently excavated LaSalle's Fort St. Louis here in the Victoria area. One of his ships was discovered in Matagorda Bay and artifacts are on display at the Museum of the Coastal Bend. In Goliad, there is the Presidio La Bahia - very fascinating place and site of a great tragedy in the Texas battle for independence from Mexico. In Berclair you can tour the Berlcair Mansion, Rockport/Fulton area has the Fulton Mansion and a maritime museum. Downtown Victoria is full of old historic mansions. If you have the time, this part of Texas is brimming with very interesting stops. I know I am forgetting quite a few.
We get inundated with people escaping the snow and cold this time of year, so you will probably need to plan the greater majority of your trip ahead of time and not leave your camping spots to chance. Try www.texascampgrounds.com

RE: RV rental near Houston
If you are not planning on spending any time in Houston and just heading south, I would rent from the Hobby location. It is a relatively short jaunt via Beltway 8 (toll road, but your BEST bet) to Hwy 59 South. Hwy 59 is four lane divided which will take you to Victoria. From Victoria, you can catch Hwy 77 to Mission and the Valley.

RE: Television reception
Many local stations have already begun the conversion over to digital signals. If your old set is analog, it will not receive digital signals well at all. Usually, a digital signal converter takes care of the problem.

I echo bsimonds - check out the R-Vision Camping Forum.
We have owned a MaxLite 30BHS since April. We try to take it out at least once a month and any problems we have experienced have been minor and dealt with quickly and effectively by our dealer. All in all, we consider we received excellent value for the $$ we spent.
